2021 March Family Newsletter

From the Principal’s Desk

The recent warmer weather has me looking forward to the first day of spring on March 20th. It is my hope that the further we get into March the less likely we will have another polar vortex and the warmer temperatures will be around a lot more often so we can get outside to enjoy the longer days.

This past week we had most of our students in the building for four days for in person learning. The kids and staff did a fantastic job of adjusting to the new routine and it was great to see the kids interacting with each other, laughing and enjoying each others’ company. The kids did a great job as well with wearing their masks, washing their hands and supporting the other mitigation practices at River View.

Thank you parents for the time, talents and leadership that you have provided your child(ren) this year while we were in the hybrid model of learning.

As we look forward I also want to remind all to be looking for information about our spring Parent Teacher Conferences. Last fall our conferences were extremely well attended in the virtual model and staff was grateful for being able to make valuable connections with you during those conversations. Our spring conferences, which will be happening March 18, 22 and 26th, will be virtual again and I encourage you to take a few minutes to sign up when the conference schedules are announced.

Conferences will be held Virtually this Spring on March 18th, 22nd and 26th. Please watch your email, as a messenger will be coming out soon with the link and directions on how to sign up!

Wisconsin Forward Spring State Assessment

The Wisconsin Forward Exam will be given in school between March 22 and May 14, 2021. The Forward Exam is a state mandated summative assessment which provides information about what students know and can do in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards. Students receive a score based on their performance in each content area.

There are sample or practice test questions available for students. An Online Tools Training (OTT) is available for students at http://dpi.wi.gov/assessment/forward/sample-items. The OTT is intended to give students the opportunity to practice with tools available on the Forward Exam, as well as allow them to familiarize themselves with the testing platform. The OTT is not scored, nor is it intended to provide practice on the test content. Students will be exploring these tools and training at school prior to testing.

The Forward Exam will be administered online with a school issued device and be given to:

· Grades 3-8 in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics

· Grades 8 Science and Social Studies

The Forward Exam includes several question types:

Multiple-Choice (MC): Question that has four answer choices, including three distractors and one correct answer. Enhanced Selected Response (ESR): Question which may contain combinations of multiple choice, short-answer, and technology-enhanced Evidence-Based Selected Response (ESBR): Question which has two parts. The student answers Part A, then provides evidence in Part B to support answer in Part A. Technology-Enhanced (TE): TE questions allow for a more engaging, interactive assessment.

Accommodations and supports for students with disabilities and/or English language learners are built into the system so that the progress of students can be accurately measured. Some students may take the Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) assessment instead of the WI Forward. The DLM assessment is intended for students with significant cognitive disabilities in grades 3-11 and is designed to compare a student's strengths and needs to clearly defined standards, skill levels, or areas of knowledge. It is aligned with the Wisconsin Essential Elements and measures how students perform in relation to those standards.

The estimated time for the test administration in each grade is approximately 75 minutes for ELA, 90 minutes for Mathematics, 90 minutes for Science (grade 8 only), and 70 minutes for Social Studies (grade 8 only). These are estimated times, as the Wisconsin Forward Exam is not a timed test so students work at their own pace.

Please continue to watch for more information about our Forward exam testing schedule. This information will be helpful for your planning purposes with regards to appointments and such. We will also be sending along more specific information for our virtual learners and how they will participate in this state mandated assessment.

Dates: June 14 - June 30 for most classes

Section Times: 8:00-9:15, 9:20-10:35, 10:40-11:55

Registration Window opens Sunday, April 18th at 2:00 p.m.

Location: Kaukauna High School

Bussing will be offered for a fee of $45.00

There will be no fees for courses

**Most classes will have a maximum enrollment of 15**

Toy Drive

Thank you to everyone who donated to the toy drive! It means a lot to us and even more to the kids at Children’s Wisconsin - Fox Valley Hospital! Your donations have helped make a child’s experience better as they are going through tough times. Your kindness has truly made this a huge success!!! Many kids will have smiles put on their faces as they have something fun to do! Thanks again for making a child smile!

The other students who helped organize the toy drive were Carly Johnson, Ava VanDerSteen, and Alyssa Eiting. All students are members of the Random Acts of Kindness Club at River View.

 

Learn how to talk with kids about underage drinking

Kids who drink alcohol are more likely to have problems at school, with their friends, and with the law. Worse, alcohol can harm kids’ physical and mental health. But you don’t need a big speech to help a kid understand the dangers of underage drinking. Start small instead. Having a lot of small, casual talks—at the store, in the drive-thru, or between video games—can make a big difference in a kid’s health. Start around age eight to prepare kids to make a lifetime of healthy decisions. Relax. Talk. Listen. Repeat. 8th grade Math

Students in Mrs. Deltour and Ms. Roman's 8th grade math classes were welcomed back to the new instructional model with team building activities. Students were challenged to build the tallest possible tower with paper, write words using string attached to markers, and a (safe) "snowball" fight to get to know their classmates better. We are looking forward to finishing the year with more teamwork and collaboration!
