March 2020 Newsletter

From the Principal’s Desk

As I grew my parents would often remind me that it is better to give than receive. This thinking was reinforced all year long, but I believe I heard it more often during the Christmas season and with good cause. With the passage of time I have worked to keep this saying in mind as I go about my daily living as there are many people in my life who have greater needs than my own.

Each day at River View I continue to be most impressed with the many students and staff who also keep the giving spirit alive beyond River View. Just recently we had a group of students and staff complete an American Heart Association campaign to raise funds for those who are in need. This year there have been other campaigns to help families who are in need of food and those who are hospitalized or receiving treatments for cancer.

This giving spirit also shows itself in ways within our school. It is daily that one can walk the hallway and see students helping each other, be it showing a new student to their classroom, assisting others if they have dropped something, turning in air pods and cell phones they have found and in some situations bringing money to the office so the rightful owner can claim it.

Another great example of giving back comes in the form of students informing trusted adults and staff with information they see and or hear at school, on the bus or online. When students provide us with this type of information it truly makes River View a safer place for everyone. We have often shared with kids when they see something, they need to say something. I am very proud of our students, but even more so when they step up to share information, as they are doing the right thing with helping us address the concerns.

Thank you for your continued support for your children and for River View Middle School. Your giving spirit is reflected in your children and we are thankful that you have instilled in their hearts and heads the desire to help others make a better school, community and world.

Be well

Dan Joseph

USING IC FOR ABSENCES

We have exciting news for you - which we hope might make some tough mornings a little easier!

Infinite Campus now includes a feature that will let parents excuse their student’s absences using the Parent Portal or the Campus Parent app on their phone. You can still call in your students as you always have by phone, but doing so with the Portal or App will allow you to avoid the phone message or excuse multiple students at different buildings at the same time, if needed. Simply log into your Parent Portal account to do so.

5th Grade Running Club

If you like running or jogging, this club is for you! We meet three times a week, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Our goal is to build our running endurance from a half-mile to 3.5 miles in time to run the River View 5K. Students will need to have a physical form, medical form, and concussion form on file before the start of practice. Paperwork can be picked up in the office. We start the last week in March, March 23rd and will go until May 14th with a pizza party on May 18th. More information to come in March.

IMPORTANT: If your child will not be attending practice for any reason please email one of the coaches before practice. Running Club is a co-curricular activity, so everyone is expected to follow the guidelines of being Respectful, Responsible and Productive. We welcome volunteers to join us on any night that they are available. In addition, donations of freezer pops will be accepted. We hand these out to the students after running on hot days.

All paperwork will need to be in before students can begin running on March 23rd. Necessary paperwork includes:

*Physical or alternate year card

*Running Club Contract

Please check with the office if you have any questions about what paperwork your child has/has not turned in. Paperwork can be picked up in the office or online.

Sports Physicals for 2020-21

Scheduling a child's sports physical can be a tricky task if put off until the last minute. You can schedule these exams with a date of April 1st or later which will be valid for two school years. River View follows the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association requirements and physicals are required for students involved in athletics. A physical form signed by a physician/ physician assistant must be on file at River View before he or she is able to participate in sports practices or events.

Prepared For Spring and Summer Sport?

Is your child planning to go out for a Spring sport? River View offers Track, 5th grade Running Club and Tennis. How about Raiders or Dance this Summer/Fall? If your child is planning to participate we want to remind you that prior to practice starting your child must have an alternate year card or a physical form, filled out by a doctor, in order to participate. If you are not sure which form your child needs please call the main office at River View and we will help you. Otherwise, please have your child pick up these forms in the main office at River View or feel free to download them for yourself at the link below. Important Reminder: with Raiders now part of River View, as soon as Enrollment for the 20-21 School Year begins, parents must register and complete the Online Enrollment. During the Online Enrollment process is where parents complete the Concussion form and Co Curricular Policy form.

Working Together

This year, educators Bobbi Jo DeBruin (SpecEd), Carrie Haven (SpecEd), and Sarah Zygarlicke (Health/FCE) have joined forces to create a positive change of inclusiveness in one of our many enrichment classes. Students of varying abilities gather weekly in the Family Consumer Education room to collaboratively create simple recipes and build friendships.

Read Across America

We are excited to share that River View will be celebrating Read Across America again this year!

Read Across America gives us a wonderful excuse to celebrate reading. Join us as we celebrate throughout the first week in March (March 2nd-6th).

Everything and anything you do to help celebrate and promote reading are appreciated!

The River View library is planning a READ-IN for each grade level, DRESS-UP days throughout the week, and special reading announcements.

The READ-IN will be on Wednesday, March 4th during all recesses.

Reading Challenge: Students who read 100 minutes throughout the first week in March are eligible to be entered in prize drawings!

We look forward to celebrating with you!

Thank you,

Your Library Crew

The Opt-Out Fundraiser

The River View PAC has decided that they would like to step away from asking families to sell items to help raise funds for the PAC organization. In place of the usual fundraising PAC is offering an Opt Out option! Families can contribute directly to the PAC and 100% of donations will go directly to support student activities! What a great idea!

RIVER VIEW MIDDLE SCHOOL

PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL (“PAC”)

Presents:

THE “OPT OUT” FUNDRAISER - 2020

We understand our families receive many requests each year to purchase items through fundraising campaigns and then a portion of the money raised goes to the school/organization. This year, we are hosting an OPT OUT fundraiser instead of a traditional fundraiser. For you and your family this means you won’t be asked to sell any items this school year.

By making a donation to the Opt Out fundraiser 100% of your gift will benefit River View and help us achieve our goals of helping students and teachers at the school. Contributions that are collected during the Opt Out campaign will be used to purchase flexible seating for classrooms, purchase a Gaga Pit and offset some expense for classroom purchases for teachers. Contributions will also help with the One Book One School activity, cover some cost for 8th grade Farewell and other student activities.

Thank you for considering this option and we thank you for selecting below which choice best fits your situation.

$_____ I will participate in the Opt Out fundraiser with a $15.00 donation.

$_____ I will participate in the Opt Out fundraiser with a $20.00 donation.

$_____ I will participate in the Opt Out fundraiser with a $25.00 donation.

Please make checks payable to River View Middle School and return to the office or mail to:

Wisconsin Forward Spring State Assessment

The Wisconsin Forward Exam will be given in schools between March 23 and May 1, 2020. The Forward Exam is a state mandated summative assessment which provides information about what students know and can do in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards. Students receive a score based on their performance in each content area.

There are sample or practice test questions available for students. An Online Tools Training (OTT) is available for students at http://dpi.wi.gov/assessment/forward/sample-items. The OTT is intended to give students the opportunity to practice with tools available on the Forward Exam, as well as allow them to familiarize themselves with the testing platform. The OTT is not scored, nor is it intended to provide practice on the test content. Students will be exploring these tools and training at school prior to testing.

Wisconsin Forward
State mandated assessment
March 23 – May 1, 2020

Grade Levels Assessed:
Grades 3-8: English Language Arts, Math
Grades 4, 8: Science
Grades 4, 8, 10: Social Studies

The Forward Exam includes several question types:
Multiple-Choice (MC): Question that has four answer choices, including three distractors and one correct answer.

Enhanced Selected Response (ESR): Question which may contain combinations of MC, short-answer, and technology-enhanced.

Evidence-Based Selected Response (ESBR): Question which has two parts. The student answers Part A, then provides evidence in Part B to support answer in Part A.

Text-Dependent Analysis (TDA): Question used on the ELA test. The TDA is a text-based analysis, based on a passage that is read by the student during the assessment. Students must draw on basic writing skills while inferring and synthesizing information from the passage in order to develop a comprehensive, holistic essay response. Students have up to 5000 characters to formulate their response.

Technology-Enhanced (TE): TE questions allow for a more engaging, interactive assessment.

Accommodations and supports for students with disabilities and/or English Language Learners are built into the system so that the progress of students can be accurately measured.

The estimated time for the test administration in each grade is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes for ELA, 1 hour and 45 minutes for Mathematics, 1 hour and 40 minutes for Science, and 1 hour and 30 minutes for Social Studies. These are estimated times, as the WI Forward Exam is not a timed test so students work at their own pace.
If you have any questions or concerns about the new assessment, please contact the office.
