March 2019 Family Newsletter

From the Principal’s Desk
Parents/Guardians
We have reached the the fourth quarter already which means spring is not far away. I know I am looking forward to longer and warmer days as well as seeing the “new” colors that come with spring.

The arrival of spring also means that our students will be participating in the state required Forward exam. For most students that means they will be completing assessments in the areas of reading and math. However, for our eighth graders they will also complete tests for social studies and science. These assessments do not count as part of any students’ grades or impact their report card. Each Forward assessment does make a difference though with regards to the school’s overall state report card, which will come out later this summer.

To prepare for the Forward assessments teachers will work with the kids to give them time to learn the format of the assessment as well the features that are part of the test so that the kids can use to assist them on testing days.  Students will also be provided time to practice sample items on the assessment. If you are interested in learning more about the practice items please visit https://wbte.drcedirect.com/WI/portals/wi

At home I would be grateful for discussions with your child(ren) about taking their time and doing their very best on the Forward, like they do for all their homework and class assessments. Ask your child what days they will be testing and work them to make sure they get a good night’s sleep, a nutritious breakfast and have a snack to help them keep their energy steady.

Thank you for your continued support for River View. And we look forward to seeing you at the March 4th (RV) and 13th (Haen) referendum information presentations.

Be well
Dan Joseph
Principal

Wisconsin Forward Spring State Assessment
The Wisconsin Forward Exam will be given in schools between March 18 and May 3, 2019.  The Forward Exam is a state mandated summative assessment which provides information about what students know and can do in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards.  Students receive a score based on their performance in each content area.

There are sample or practice test questions available for students.  An Online Tools Training (OTT) is available for students at http://dpi.wi.gov/assessment/forward/sample-items. The OTT is intended to give students the opportunity to practice with tools available on the Forward Exam, as well as allow them to familiarize themselves with the testing platform.  The OTT is not scored, nor is it intended to provide practice on the test content. Students will be exploring these tools and training at school prior to testing.

The Forward Exam will be administered online and be given to:
Grades 3-8 in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics,
Grades 4 and 8 in Science and,
Grades 4, 8, and 10 in Social Studies

The Forward Exam includes several question types:
Multiple-Choice (MC): Question that has four answer choices, including three distractors and one correct answer.
Enhanced Selected Response (ESR): Question which may contain combinations of MC, short-answer, and technology-enhanced.
Evidence-Based Selected Response (ESBR): Question which has two parts.  The student answers Part A, then provides evidence in Part B to support answer in Part A.
Text-Dependent Analysis (TDA): Question used on the ELA test.  The TDA is a text-based analysis, based on a passage that is read by the student during the assessment.  Students must draw on basic writing skills while inferring and synthesizing information from the passage in order to develop a comprehensive, holistic essay response.  Students have up to 5000 characters to formulate their response.
Technology-Enhanced (TE): TE questions allow for a more engaging, interactive assessment.

Accommodations and supports for students with disabilities and/or English language learners are built into the system so that the progress of students can be accurately measured.
The estimated time for the test administration in each grade is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes for ELA, 1 hour and 45 minutes for Mathematics, 1 hour and 40 minutes for Science, and 1 hour and 30 minutes for Social Studies.  These are estimated times, as the WI Forward Exam is not a timed test so students work at their own pace.

If you have any questions or concerns about the new assessment, please contact the office.

5th Grade Running Club
This is a club for kids who enjoy running and jogging. Our club is all about having fun while running. We do not focus on speed but work to build stamina and endurance. We will jog and run, play running games, build up our running mileage, and work towards the goal of running the Cellcom 5k, May 18th in Green Bay (The Cellcom 5k is an optional event that parents would bring their child to and from and requires a separate registration. We will meet as a group before and after the race, but students would be running at their own pace). The last practice will be May 20th, a pizza party.

Running Club meeting time will be from 3:15 to 4:15 and then will work up to 4:30 as we build our endurance and run further. Coaches will notify families as to any time changes. Runners will  meet in Gym B at 3:15 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, starting March 25th. Tuesday is band and orchestra night so those students will be excused if they are attending those practices.

IMPORTANT: If your child will not be attending practice for any reason please email one of the coaches before practice. Running Club is a co-curricular activity, so everyone is expected to follow the guidelines of being Respectful, Responsible and Productive. We welcome volunteers to join us on any night that they are available. In addition, donations of freezer pops will be accepted. We hand these out to the students after running on hot days.

All paperwork will need to be in before students can begin running on March 25th. Necessary paperwork includes:
Physical and Preparticipation Physical Evaluation History Form
Running Club Contract

Please check with the office if you have any questions about what paperwork your child has/has not turned in. Paperwork can be picked up in the office or online. https://www.kaukauna.k12.wi.us/schools/riverview/activities/cocurricularinformation.cfm

Sports Physicals for 2019-20
Scheduling a child's sports physical can be a tricky task if put off until the last minute. You can schedule these exams with a date of April 1st or later which will be valid for two school years.  River View follows the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association requirements and physicals are required for students involved in athletics. A physical form signed by a physician/ physician assistant must be on file at River View before he or she is able to participate in sports practices or events.

Track Sign Up
Sixth through eighth grade students who are interested in track can sign up in the office.  Participants need to have all paperwork handed in to the office before practice starts on April 3rd (3:30-5:00 pm).

7th Grade Field Trip
The 7th grade staff are planning to take seventh grade students to the Milwaukee Public Museum on Wednesday, April 24th and Thursday, April 25th. We are excited to include a multimedia component to the field trip for students to support their 21st century skills.  We are recommending that students bring a portable charger for their devices with them on the trip. Permission slips will be coming home around March 21 and will need to be returned by Friday, March 29.  Please pay close attention to the date listed on your child's permission slip to know which day they will be traveling to the museum!

P.E. Force
As we begin to bring a close to our 3rd quarter we look forward to getting outside for our activities.  Beginning March 25th all of our activity units with the exception of archery for grades 6, 7 and 8 are designed to be outside and we would like to remind parents and students to be prepared by bringing a warmer change of clothes.

The 4th quarter also brings another mile assessment for all grade levels and that date has not yet been determined.

New activities are ahead include: disk games, softball/kickball, biking, football, archery, track and field and exclusively for the 8th graders creative games.  Each grade level will have three of the listed activities

In addition, pay attention to the announcements for a new RV opportunity beginning this spring.  Mr. Mees one of our 8th grade Science teachers is starting an after school tennis program.  Participants will need to sign up in the office and have on file a physical or alternate year card.

Please remind your son/daughter to bring a change of clothes. Sweatpants and yoga pants are acceptable wear but they need to be a change of clothing.
