September Family Newsletter 2018

From the Desktop of Mr. Joseph

The building is put back together, the dust is cleared away and we are off to a great start to a new school year. As many of you know this past summer the north portion of River View went through an extensive overhaul of its heating and ventilating systems. We are very much looking forward to the more consistent heating and air flow in all the rooms impacted this summer. Also receiving updates were the bathrooms and lighting on the north end. Next summer the contractors will be back to complete similar work on the south end of the building.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their patience and understanding this summer with the construction. I know having Registration in a different location and postponing our Open House a bit caused some inconvenience and anxiety, however, in the end everything turned out as best it could. I also want to thank our district painting crew for their work sprucing up the school and our cleaning crew for all their time and energy to get the school ready for the kids and staff. Kaukauna Strong teamwork by all.

The school year is underway and students did a fabulous job last week of getting themselves back into the school year routine and reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. I am proud of our 5th graders for coming into the building with confidence and handling the transition to their new school so well. I am looking forward to keeping the good going all year long.

Thanks for your continued support and hope to see you at our Open House on September 13th from 6:00-7:30 pm.

Dan Joseph
Principal

Safety First

The safety of all our students is a priority that we take seriously both inside the building as well as outside on the playground, in the parking lot and in our crosswalks. With the school year underway I want to remind all drivers to please slow down as you are moving about school property. Thank you as well for giving students and adults plenty of space while they are in the crosswalks and for not calling your child to run between buses to be picked up in the street.
Your child(ren)'s safety is very important to us so thank you for your support and cooperation with keeping these requests in mind as you come to school.

Safety Week

During the week of September 17th River View will hosting its annual Safety Week. As part of this week students will participate in various practice drills(fire, tornado, hold, evacuation) to help them be better prepared in the event we have an actual situation. Students will also participate in a cyber/internet safety presentation on September 26th, given by our School Resource Officers. This presentation will cover topics such as cyberbullying, internet safety, strategies to protect oneself when online, reporting and potential consequences for inappropriate use of technology.

The River View Way

  • Be Respectful
  • Be Responsible
  • Be Productive

Our PBIS kick-off jump started our school year in 2018-19. Staff and students put a lot of time into planning our kick-off. Each station was run by a group of 8th grade PBIS student leaders who did an excellent job of modeling our expectations for students in grades 5-7. Staff will continue to acknowledge positive choices and behaviors by handing out Eagle Bills. Students can save these bills for items from our Eagle Bills Award Menu or put their bills into their grade level bins for weekly rewards. Each month, students that did not receive a Major ODR (Office Discipline Referral) will take place in a reward celebration.

Thank you for continuing to have conversations about PBIS with your student and helping to promote the River View Way!

What do you need to know about Eighth Grade and Academic and Career Planning Conferences

A message from Mr. Hill, School Counselor (grade 8)

The Eighth Grade Academic and Career Planning Meetings are specifically designed for parents/guardians and student to meet with me to gain insight into their child’s development to this point and to help the student create goals for the future and assist with the transition to the high school.

Parents are key members of the conference team. This year, you will receive an email for you to schedule an Eighth Grade Academic and Career Planning Conference for your child through Sign Up Genius. Conferences are held at 8:00 am, 9:45 am, 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm and last approximately 45 minutes and I will start the week of October 1st. If any of those times do not work, I can also try to set up by appointment if necessary. If you are planning on attending your child’s conference please make an appointment for a conference by October 31st. If you are unable to attend your child’s conference, please contact me at 766-6111 ext. 4213 or by email (hilljo@kaukaunasd.org) that you will not be attending and I will meet with your son/daughter individually. Students will bring home a folder that contains all the information we covered in the conference.

After School Homework Help

Starting September 10, River View will be offering after school homework help from 3:15 pm to 3:45 pm each week Monday through Thursday*. Any students who are interested in getting additional help with homework are welcome to participate. This homework time will take place in the Library and is open to all RVMS students. Each day there will be certified staff in the Library from various content areas so should your student become involved in this opportunity it is certain there will be ample staff available to assist them. Teachers may assign students to after school homework help and will inform you of that if they do. You may also assign your child to this supportive opportunity. If you do decide to do that, thank you for alerting your child's teacher so they can support your decision. Students who stay for homework help will need to arrange their own transportation if they do not have a bus to take them home.

*For planning purposes know we will not offer after school homework help on half days or the days before break/vacation.

Homework Request

We understand students may be absent from time to time due to illness. When this occurs we will be happy to gather your child’s homework so you can pick it up or have it sent home with a friend or sibling. If you request homework, thank you for calling as soon as possible in the morning as this will give us time to get things organized.

5th Grade Beginning Band and Orchestra

Every student who is thinking about starting a band or orchestra instrument is encouraged to begin in the 5th grade year because it becomes more difficult to start an instrument in the future once others have already begun. Here are some important dates to mark on your calendar!

September 6th – 14th -Recruitment Week– All 5th grade students will be able to participate in our mouthpiece testing and instrument fittings.

September 18th – Band and Orchestra Registration meetings. Parents and students should plan to attend this important meeting at either 4:30 or 5:30 pm at River View to get all the details about these great programs.

Week of October 1st - Band and Orchestra lessons begin!!

Questions? – Please contact one of the following instructors:

Kathryn Nesemann, Orchestra Instructor –nesemannk@kaukaunasd.org

Health Office

The River View Health Office provides many valuable services to our students and families. As we begin our new school year we want to share with families a brief description of how we support student learning on a daily basis. This support includes: Health and Wellness Assess and treat (as needed) minor injuries. We will call you with injury concerns that may need medical care. If we cannot reach you by phone, then we call adults you provided as emergency contacts. Please plan for an emergency in advance so your child can get needed help.  We ask you to update health information online on each of your children including your permission to use Tylenol, ibuprofen, tums, Benadryl along with cough and cold medicine for minor illnesses and aches. Should your child need some specific over the counter medicine, please provide it along with written guidance and signature for your child.  Administer daily prescription medication (we need medical orders from the MD along with medicine in a prescription labeled bottle). We also administer emergency medication for students when required by their health condition.

It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to provide emergency medications for school sponsored events outside of school hours including athletics and other extra-curricular activities.  Some students need specific nursing support to attend school, a few examples are: nutrition tube feedings, suctioning, seizure interventions, diabetes management (insulin administration, carb counting, illness care).  If your child sustains an injury significant enough to need school accommodations (concussion, broken bones), we do rely on written guidance from the physician who provided care.  All emergency medical situations will be handled through the emergency medical system by activating 911.

Communicable Disease Immunization compliance and referral to local resources. The State of Wisconsin requires specific shots for students. All 6th graders are required by State Immunization Guidelines to have updated their Tdap vaccine.  Consult with local medical providers and local health departments on disease outbreaks and contact involved families.

    Destination Imagination (Grades 5-8)

Destination Imagination (D.I.) is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, problem solving, teamwork, and intellect. During the challenges the students will focus on STEM, fine arts and serving learning activities. Students will be expected to work as a team to create skits, role play, build props and use their quick thinking. Sound like something you want to get involved in? We sure hope so!

Students who are interested in trying out for the River View D.I. teams should make sure the Medical Treatment and Co-Curricular Forms, which was done with online registration or you can pick one up in the office. These forms are due to the RV Office by the end of the day September 28th. The first student informational meeting will be October 4th in the DEC. Once teams are established, they will meet after school on Thursdays to work on group problems and prepare for competition. Practices will last about an hour and a half. The D.I. season runs the months of October thru April with the regional competition on March 9th and the state competition on April 13th.

Questions can be emailed to Holly Willenbrink willenbrinkh@kaukaunasd.org or Stacey Heindel heindels@kaukaunasd.org

    7th and 8th Grade Math

With the new school year, comes a new Big Ideas website. This website is a very useful tool for students and parents. We encourage you to explore and use the website, www.bigideasmath.com, at home. Students have set up accounts and have been given access to the site. A letter should have come home with the "Student ID" and "Username" for your student to log into the site. If you have any questions about navigating the site, please feel free to contact your student's math teacher.

Lunch and Ala Carte Helpful Hints

Parents have the option to put a block on the purchase of ala carte items. Contact Chartwells at 759-6122.
    • Milk is considered Ala Carte if not purchased with a meal. If a student has a block on purchasing ala carte and brings a cold lunch and wants to purchase a milk, he/she will not be able to purchase the milk. To avoid this, families can have a 40 cent limit on the ala carte versus a block on purchasing ala carte.

    • Students who receive free and reduced meals need to have money in their account and be in the positive in order to purchase Ala Carte items.

    • If students are told that their balance is too low to purchase a meal, they should see a lunch supervisor or ask to go to the office so that we can help support them in calling to have someone bring money or a lunch to school.

    • Contact Chartwells to make any changes to your account at 759-6122.

    The Cherrydale Fundraiser

The Cherrydale Fundraiser features a variety of items from wrapping paper and chocolates to dishes and décor. The combination of fabulous items offered through the Cherrydale Fundraiser could help you find some great holiday gifts! RV will run this fundraiser from October 1-23 with the pickup date as Thursday, November 8th from 3-6 pm in the cafeteria. The RV PAC appreciates your support!

    Breakfast Club

Breakfast Club meets Monday-Friday from 7-7:40 am in room 138. All students are welcome to join us to complete homework, socialize, or play games. Students can bring their own breakfast, or purchase a breakfast in the school cafeteria.

Box Tops for Education / Milk Moola / Can Tabs

Attention parents, grandparents, and great grandparents, lend me your ear. RVMS appreciates all of your efforts in turning in Box Tops, Milk Moola, and can tabs. If you haven’t turned in these items yet, please turn then in ASAP. The school will be turning in the box tops for education soon, and we want to use the money to help pay for the end of the year school trips. Thanks again for all you do to help the River View community.
