Spring is here, though it would be difficult to decipher that based on the weather. Soon enough we will again be enjoying warmer days and colorful landscapes. Spring’s arrival also means we are entering the fourth and final quarter of the school year. To put another way, there are only forty-five days left in the school year for classroom teachers to present the remaining curriculum. And because this curriculum is as important as the rest of the year please help your son or daughter keep in mind that they will need to continue to be focused and engaged if they want to finish strong. There is still a great deal of work and studying to be done before students can begin to relax.
Students need to understand that learning can be hard work. If the students realize that working hard in school is in their best interest, they usually rise to the occasion. Parents must send their children a clear message that academic achievement is the first priority and that it should take precedence over other activities even at this time of year. Remember that your comments have a profound effect on your child’s attitude, their outlook on school and homework. When you communicate your expectations to your child be sure that you avoid negative comments and words. Positive communication enhances self-confidence and academic performance. Don’t let your son or daughter use the words “I can’t.” If you give them the opportunity to learn and couple that with the expectation that they can do it, then that is what will happen.
As adults we set goals and students are no different. With three quarters of the school year over now is a great time to remind your child of the academic goals they set for themselves when the school year was fresh. If they do not remember those goals have them set new ones and write them down so you can come back to those over the course of this quarter to celebrate their progress toward or make adjustments to reach their goals.
Yes, indeed the weather will be getting warmer and thoughts of summer may begin to creep in around the edges of your kids’ thinking. But right now, more than ever, this is the time your child needs to push through to the end and I thank you for helping them do that.

Wisconsin Forward Spring State Assessment
The Wisconsin Forward Exam will be given in school between March 22 and May 14, 2021. The Forward Exam is a state mandated summative assessment which provides information about what students know and can do in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards. Students receive a score based on their performance in each content area.
There are sample or practice test questions available for students. An Online Tools Training (OTT) is available for students at http://dpi.wi.gov/assessment/forward/sample-items. The OTT is intended to give students the opportunity to practice with tools available on the Forward Exam, as well as allow them to familiarize themselves with the testing platform. The OTT is not scored, nor is it intended to provide practice on the test content. Students will be exploring these tools and training at school prior to testing.
The Forward Exam will be administered online with a school issued device and be given to:
· Grades 3-8 in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics
· Grades 8 Science and Social Studies
The Forward Exam includes several question types:
Multiple-Choice (MC): Question that has four answer choices, including three distractors and one correct answer. Enhanced Selected Response (ESR): Question which may contain combinations of multiple choice, short-answer, and technology-enhanced Evidence-Based Selected Response (ESBR): Question which has two parts. The student answers Part A, then provides evidence in Part B to support answer in Part A. Technology-Enhanced (TE): TE questions allow for a more engaging, interactive assessment.

Accommodations and supports for students with disabilities and/or English language learners are built into the system so that the progress of students can be accurately measured. Some students may take the Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) assessment instead of the WI Forward. The DLM assessment is intended for students with significant cognitive disabilities in grades 3-11 and is designed to compare a student's strengths and needs to clearly defined standards, skill levels, or areas of knowledge. It is aligned with the Wisconsin Essential Elements and measures how students perform in relation to those standards.
The estimated time for the test administration in each grade is approximately 75 minutes for ELA, 90 minutes for Mathematics, 90 minutes for Science (grade 8 only), and 70 minutes for Social Studies (grade 8 only). These are estimated times, as the Wisconsin Forward Exam is not a timed test so students work at their own pace.

Spring Tennis
Welcome to Spring Tennis! Based on our increased numbers this year and to increase our social distancing, we will be having two different sessions. Grades 5/6 will be on Monday/Thursday and grades 7/8 will be on Tuesday/Friday. Please do your best to have a filled water bottle when you get to the courts and to wear shorts/warm-up pants with pockets. If you do not own a tennis racquet, that's okay. There are racquets for you to borrow as well. Tennis will take place after school from 3:15 until 4:15. Students will learn how to hit a groundstroke, volley, overhead, serve, scoring, strategies, and tennis etiquette. Tennis will start on April 12 and will go until May 28th. Please be listening to announcements as certain days may be canceled due to inclement weather. See you on the courts soon! Students in Foods for Fitness (8th grade) started cooking in the kitchens (lab) this semester. Their first lab was egg cups to wrap up the breakfast unit. Students learned the importance of a healthy and easy breakfast.

Sports Physicals for 2021-2022
Scheduling a child's sports physical can be a tricky task if put off until the last minute. You can schedule these exams with a date of April 1st or later which will be valid for two school years. River View follows the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association requirements and physicals are required for students involved in athletics. A physical form signed by a physician/ physician assistant must be on file at River View before he or she is able to participate in sports practices or events.
