September 2019 Family Newsletter

From the Desktop of Mr. Joseph

The school year is underway and students are doing an outstanding job of getting back into the routine. I have stopped in many rooms over the course of the week and have been most pleased with the productive conversations about the need for everyone to be working together to create classrooms that are supportive and welcoming for all. This message is being carried beyond the classrooms and applied throughout the school through acts of helpfulness and kindness toward others who need help finding their next class, their bus or in some cases, the lunchroom. River View does have great kids and I am grateful each day for the respect they are showing their peers.

Indeed we are off to a great start. This new year also brings our second Sources of Strength training a bit later in September. Last winter we had 30 students trained and were able to complete two campaigns(activities) to help all our students better understand their areas of strength and identify trusted adults in their lives. This year we are looking to have a total of sixty kids trained and begin our campaigns much earlier. I am energized and looking forward to working with the kids and our Peer Leaders to begin planning more campaigns that will make River View an even more welcoming and safe place for students. If you are interested in learning more about Sources of Strength please visit https://sourcesofstrength.org/

I would like to take a moment to thank all of you who came to Open House last week. I have been at River View for awhile now, and I believe this year’s Open House was one of the best attended. Your presence at this event was a powerful message to your child(ren) and their teachers that you will be involved in their education, and that you want them to do their best each day. Thank you for taking the time to come to Open House, and for working with us to create positive lines of communication that we can lean on over the course of the school year. Together, we will make this a special school year.

Take care,

Dan Joseph
Principal

Safety First

The safety of all our students is a priority that we take seriously both inside the building as well as outside on the playground, in the parking lot and in our crosswalks. With the school year underway I want to remind all drivers to please slow down as you are moving about school property. Thank you as well for giving students and adults plenty of space while they are in the crosswalks and for not calling your child to run between buses to be picked up in the street.

Thank you for NOT parking in drop off lanes and in non-designated parking areas. This makes the traffic flow much smoother and is safer for everyone.

Your child(ren)'s safety is very important to us so thank you for your support and cooperation with keeping these requests in mind as you come to school.

The River View Way

*Be Respectful

*Be Responsible

*Be Productive

Our PBIS kick-off jump started our school year in 2019-20. Staff and students put a lot of time into planning our kick-off. Each station was run by a group of 8th grade PBIS student leaders who did an excellent job of modeling our expectations for students in grades 5-7.

Thank you for continuing to have conversations about PBIS with your student and helping to promote the River View Way!

Picture Retake Day

River View School will hold a Picture Retake Day on Wednesday, September 18th from 8:00-11:30 am. This would be for students who have already received their photos and did not like how they turned out as well as for those students who haven’t had their picture taken yet. Regarding picture charges, please write a separate check to Network Photography for your picture packet (located in the office). Purchasing a picture packet does not include the purchase of a yearbook. Attendance Reminders

As the school year gets underway we want to remind you of a few things regarding our attendance policy. Please refer to our complete attendance policy in the family handbook (page 14-16) for a more detailed description of this policy. In short, a few reminders we would like you to be aware of:

1. Parents/Guardians are allowed to excuse their student for up to 10 days in a school year. A day is considered all or part of a day a student may be absent.

2. If your student leaves during the school day and attends an appointment, they must bring back a note from the provider to be given to the attendance kiosk. This note can and should be turned in immediately the following day should the student not return to school that same day. This note is critical in helping us appropriately code the students absence.

3. We do send out letters throughout the year regarding students attendance to make sure we are all on the same page. These letters are meant as a communication tool and while we appreciate guardians keeping up on their students attendance through Infinite Campus our goal is to avoid any discrepancies in an attendance record.

4. Please take a look at our family handbook located here: River View Family Handbook to see specifics about calling your student in for an absence. When possible, please call our attendance phone line ahead of time if your student will be leaving for an appointment. This allows us to better help your child transition to and from class and be waiting by door 1 for your pick up.

As always, if you have further questions about attendance please feel free to reach out to us for any clarifications. Thank you!

What Parents Need to Know About Eighth Grade Academic and Career Planning Meetings

A message from Mrs. Hinz, School Counselor (grade 8)

To meet the goal of equipping all students with the knowledge and skills needed to find success in their post-secondary endeavors, the School Counselors of Kaukauna Area School District have designed the Academic and Career Planning (ACP) meetings during a student's 8th grade and Junior year.

At River View specifically, these meetings are designed for parents/guardians and students to meet with me to gain insight into their child’s development to this point and to help the student create goals for the future and assist with the transition to high school. Your child has been working very hard on a powerpoint and collecting relevant career information to share at their ACP meeting with you.

Parents are key members of the conference team. I will be sending out an email to sign up for an Eighth Grade Academic and Career Planning meeting for your child through Sign Up Genius by the end of September. ACP meetings will be held most days at 7:50 am, 9:45 am, 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm and lasts approximately 45 minutes. These meetings will run from October 8th through December 19th. If you are planning on attending your child’s Academic and Career Planning meeting please sign up by October 31st. If any of these times do not work, I can also try to set up by appointment if necessary. If you are unable to attend your child’s conference, please contact me at 766-6111 ext. 4211 or by email (hinza@kaukaunasd.org) and I will meet with your son/daughter individually (your child will bring home a folder that contains all the information we covered in the conference).

As in the past, I will be holding group ACP meetings on the nights of the parent-teacher conferences in the fall, November 7th, and November 18th. (Please note that these group meetings are meant for parents who have had older children who have gone through the process and are not as individualized).

After School Homework Help

Starting September 9, River View will be offering after school homework help from 3:15 pm to 3:45 pm each week Monday through Thursday*. Any students who are interested in getting additional help with homework are welcome to participate. This homework time will take place in the Library and is open to all RVMS students. Each day there will be certified staff in the Library from various content areas so should your student become involved in this opportunity it is certain there will be ample staff available to assist them. Teachers may assign students to after school homework help and will inform you of that if they do. You may also assign your child to this supportive opportunity. If you do decide to do that, thank you for alerting your child's teacher so they can support your decision. Students who stay for homework help will need to arrange their own transportation if they do not have a bus to take them home.

*For planning purposes know we will not offer after school homework help on half days or the days before break/vacation.

Homework Request

We understand students may be absent from time to time due to illness. When this occurs, we will be happy to gather your child’s homework so you can pick it up or have it sent home with a friend or sibling. If you request homework, thank you for calling as soon as possible in the morning as this will give us time to get things organized.

5th Grade Beginning Band and Orchestra

Every student who is thinking about starting a band or orchestra instrument is encouraged to begin in the 5th grade year because it becomes more difficult to start an instrument in the future once others have already begun. Here are some important dates to mark on your calendar!

*September 5th – 13th -Recruitment Week– All 5th grade students will be able to participate in our mouthpiece testing and instrument fittings.

*Week of September 30th - Band and Orchestra lessons begin!!

Health Office

The River View Health Office provides many valuable services to our students and families. As we begin our new school year we want to share with families a brief description of how we support student learning on a daily basis.

This support includes:

*Health and Wellness ∙ Assess and treat (as needed) minor injuries. We will call you with injury concerns that may need medical care. If we cannot reach you by phone, then we call adults you provided as emergency contacts. Please plan for an emergency in advance so your child can get needed help.

*We ask you to update health information online on each of your children including your permission to use Tylenol, ibuprofen, tums, Benadryl along with cough and cold medicine for minor illnesses and aches. Should your child need some specific over the counter medicine, please provide it along with written guidance and signature for your child.

*Administer daily prescription medication (we need medical orders from the MD along with medicine in a prescription labeled bottle). We also administer emergency medication for students when required by their health condition. It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to provide emergency medications for school sponsored events outside of school hours including athletics and other extra-curricular activities.

*Some students need specific nursing support to attend school, a few examples are: nutrition tube feedings, suctioning, seizure interventions, diabetes management (insulin administration, carb counting, illness care).

*If your child sustains an injury significant enough to need school accommodations (concussion, broken bones), we do rely on written guidance from the physician who provided care.

*All emergency medical situations will be handled through the emergency medical system by activating 911. Communicable Disease

*Immunization compliance and referral to local resources. The State of Wisconsin requires specific shots for students. All 6th graders are required by State Immunization Guidelines to have updated their Tdap vaccine.

*Consult with local medical providers and local health departments on disease outbreaks and contact involved families.

Lunch and Ala Carte Helpful Hints

· Parents have the option to put a block on the purchase of ala carte items. Contact Chartwells at 759-6122.

· Milk is considered Ala Carte if not purchased with a meal. If a student has a block on purchasing ala carte and brings a cold lunch and wants to purchase a milk, he/she will not be able to purchase the milk. To avoid this, families can have a 50 cent limit on the ala carte versus a block on purchasing ala carte.

· Students who receive free and reduced meals need to have money in their account and be in the positive in order to purchase Ala Carte items.

· If students are told that their balance is too low to purchase a meal, they should see a lunch supervisor or ask to go to the office so that we can help support them in calling to have someone bring money or a lunch to school.

· Contact Chartwells to make any changes to your account at 759-6122.

Breakfast Club

Breakfast Club meets Monday-Friday

from 7-7:40 in room 138. All students are

welcome to join us to complete homework,

socialize, or play games. Students can bring

their own breakfast, or purchase a breakfast in

the school cafeteria.
