2020 November Newsletter

 From the Principal

As you read this the first quarter will be drawing to a close. I must say I do not recall a start to a school year like this one. There have been many firsts for all of us and though there have been and will be more new challenges, I am confident each of us will find a way to take another step forward and meet those challenges.

During challenges I think back to what I learned years ago about the diamond. Diamonds can only occur when there is steady pressure. If that pressure does not exist, coal will stay coal and we do not get to enjoy the beauty of a precious gem. Thank you for being the steady, loving pressure your child(ren) needs to stay engaged in the learning process as that learning in the end is a treasure more valuable than a diamond.

Happy November and Happy Thanksgiving to each of you. This year I am thankful for:
*our families continued efforts to encourage and motivate their children to engage in their learning

*the flexibility that our families have shown this year in face of challenging obstacles. You are excellent examples of perseverance and patience for your children.

*the growth we have all experienced with technology. Nine weeks ago we could not have imagined this journey would have taught us so much about Google Meets, Hotspots, Chromebooks, Google Classroom, Turn in button, Seesaw and many other apps.

*that we are still able to have kids attending school in person. Yes, I too would love nothing more than to have them back five days a week and that is the end goal, unfortunately we are not there yet.

*that our students are able to spend some school days with their friends. Right now emotional connections are more important than even.

*our River View families and their strong support for our school, the District and our community. You are evidence that Kaukauna Strong is alive and thriving.

Be well one and all

Dan Joseph

Principal

Counselor Corner

River View Virtual Calming Room
Current circumstances have led some students and families to feel a little more stressed and anxious. Counselors are available to support students in person and virtually via Google Meet as needed. We have created a River View Virtual Calming Room that students can access to find relaxation techniques and coping strategies. Some of the strategies students may find deep breathing, mindfulness, relaxation, guided meditation, gratitude, and relaxing music. New ideas and resources are continually being added. Students can find this resource on the River View Home page under the student and family services tab or click on the direct link

Is your child planning to go out for a winter sport? River View Middle School offers boys basketball, wrestling, and girls basketball during the winter months. Winter Sports Letter

This message is pertaining to winter athletics at River View.

In order to help us plan for upcoming seasons and how we can offer them in a safe way we are in need of knowing a few things, specifically what our numbers might look like for each of the activities listed below. We are asking you to please click the links below and fill out the Google Form that opens if your child may be interested in participating in the following:

Boys Basketball - This will be intramural based and only participating with RV students. This is only for our 7th and 8th grade boys.

Girls Basketball - We do not have any details yet on what this will look like but would like to know if your child may be interested in going out (7th and 8th grade girls).

Wrestling - We do not have any details yet on what this will look like if we are able to offer the program but would like to know if your child may be interested in going out (5th-8th grade students).

Winter Athletic Sign Ups

**Ski Club - Unfortunately due to many circumstances beyond our control we will not be able to offer Ski Club this year. We appreciate all of the families help in filling out the survey, however, after many conversations and discussions with many parties involved we are just not able to safely pull it off this year. Thank you for your understanding!

Are you interested in trying out for Destination Imagination (Grades 5-8)?

Destination Imagination (DI) teams pick a challenge to work on and then use STEAM knowledge to build and create an invention, structure, script, props, and costumes with limited resources. It is a great opportunity to work in a team and show your creative skills. DI practices will typically be held Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from mid-November to April. There will be a few Saturday morning practices. We are looking for students who are good team players, creative, and willing to work on things at home. Competitions will be recorded and sent in this year.

If interested in trying out for a team, please pick up form from the office or from Mrs. Heindel.

Tryouts will be held Tuesday, November 10th & Friday, November 13th in the DEC after school. You only need to attend one tryout.

School expectations…

As we head into even cooler temperatures and wet weather conditions, the following expectations become even more important for students to remember...

*Boots if going in the snow.

*Snow pants if wanting to play in the snow.

Recess reminders:

Inclement Weather/Cancellation

Please remind your son/daughter to dress appropriately for the cold weather. In the event of a snowstorm and school cancellations, we will communicate over the following radio and television stations. Additionally, the district has been using the capabilities of a messenger that sends e-mail notification to families with up-to-date e-mail addresses in our student management system.
