2021 Family Newsletter

From the Principal’s Desk

I would like to use this space to express my sincere gratitude to our parents, guardians and grandparents for the incredible support you have continuously provided your child and grandchildren this year. This school year has provided challenges none of us could have imagined in previous years and yet, through it all your perseverance, patience and encouragement have helped make it possible for the learning to continue.

Thank you as well for the support you have given with our mitigation practices. Each day I continue to be impressed with how the children keep their masks on, social distance and work to keep those around them safe.

I also want to share my appreciation for the ongoing feedback we have received from you. It is almost daily we have families communicating with us about their children needing to quarantine or that they are getting tested. I am particularly pleased with the feedback from both ends of the spectrum as it helps me, the building and the district better understand your concerns, frustrations and celebrations. Please continue to share.

Thank you for your continued support and I know we will all make it through this and come out stronger on the other side.

PIE TIME

Beginning January 26th, our PIE Time Enrichment courses have been converted to Guided Study Halls. Students in Cohort A will have their Guided Study Hall on Monday and Tuesday, and Cohort B students will have theirs on Thursday and Friday. Students who have Practice and Intervention classes will remain with those classes to receive the focused intervention support that is needed to address skill gaps.

Over the course of the school year, we have continued to notice an increase in the number of students who are struggling with getting their work completed, so we want to provide this opportunity during the school day to support students with their work. This change will give students more time to connect in person with their teachers who can provide additional encouragement and help students learn how to better track what they need to complete.

During the Guided Study Hall students will be expected to work on missing and or late work. If a student has no missing work or corrections and is passing all their classes, they will read or engage in educational programs such as My Path, Prodigy and or Freckle. Your child’s Quarter 3 Enrichment teacher will be the teacher they will work with during their Guided Study Hall.

Pick up/Drop off

Parents/Guardians, please do not drop off or pick up your students in the designated bus lane on the North side of River View (river side). While we certainly understand in the cold months it is convenient to get your students closer to the building, please understand from the safety standpoint, that we must keep that area reserved for bus traffic only. Kobussen and River View greatly appreciate your help in this matter. The drop off locations including the front of the building (west side), the tennis courts (south side) of the building and Island Street (east side) are all drop off options for River View students. Thank you for your help and understanding with this matter.

Announcing STAGECRAFT CLUB

Are you interested in being a part of the stage crew for our school musical and learning about the backstage part of the theater?? Would you like to be able to run our soundboard or lightboard or possibly be in charge of the special effects in a production? 5th Grade Running Club

This is a club for kids who enjoy running and jogging. Our club is all about having fun while running. We do not focus on speed but work to build stamina and endurance. We will jog, run, play running games, build up our running mileage and work towards the goal of running a 5k. The last practice will be May 14th

Running Club meeting time will be from 3:15 to 4:15 and then will work up to 4:30 as we build our endurance and run further. Coaches will notify families as to any time changes. Runners will meet in Gym B at 3:15, Cohort A on Monday and Tuesday, Cohort B on Thursday and Friday, starting the week of March 29th. Tuesday is band and orchestra practice after school so those students will be excused for those practices. We are also looking for a few responsible 6th-8th graders to be student coaches/helpers for both Cohort A and Cohort B. These students should be responsible and reliable leaders. Please email Mrs. Willenbrink if interested. Upperclassmen need to also have a physical and register online or in the office. Upperclassmen will not be able to do track and be a running club helper though.

IMPORTANT: If your child will not be attending practice for any reason please email one of the coaches before practice. Running Club is a co-curricular activity, so everyone is expected to follow the guidelines of being Respectful, Responsible and Productive. We welcome volunteers to join us on any night that they are available. In addition, donations of freezer pops will be accepted. We hand these out to the students after running on hot days.

All paperwork will need to be in before students can begin running on March 29th. Necessary paperwork includes:
*Physical
*Preparticipation Physical Evaluation History Form
*Running Club Contract

Please check with the office if you have any questions about what paperwork your child has/has not turned in. Paperwork is online or can be picked up in the office.

Coaches: Holly Willenbrink willenbrinkh@kaukaunasd.org
Jacqui Jenkins jenkinsj@kaukaunasd.org

Ping Pong Club

River View Middle School now has a Ping Pong Club! Students play on four different tables in the balcony of Gym A. The club takes place every Tuesday and Thursday for the months of January and February (cohort A participates on Tuesday’s and cohort B participates on Thursday’s). Students are learning about the rules, technique, and proper etiquette of this life long activity. Students battle each other in events such as champions & challengers, round-robin 4 minute matches, as well as the “Golden Paddle” award. The “Golden Paddle” was created on River View’s very own 3D printer and is used as the traveling trophy. The last competition involved serving ping pong balls into a basket and the student with the most was the winner with major bragging rights. Students are having a blast during this naturally social distanced activity!

Do you have a ping pong table at your home that is no longer used? Do you have extra paddles? If you are thinking of getting rid of any equipment, please contact Mr. Mees at meesn@kaukaunasd.org Thank you for your time and in considering your donation to our club.
