April Family Newsletter 2018

From the Principal’s Desk

Happy Spring everyone! I know I am looking forward to the longer and warmer days of April. With the change of season it also means we are heading into the last quarter of the school year and indeed there is still a lot of learning that will be taking place before school lets out in June. As we head into the warmer days, I want to take this opportunity to encourage all to stay the course when it comes to maintaining the routines you have established this year regarding homework expectations, bedtimes, etc. I know the kids will want to be outside more and I guess I can not blame them, but as I shared earlier there is a good amount of new learning that will be happening yet this year. So maintaining routines will help your kids stay focused and assist them with keeping the learning moving forward. Soon enough June will be here and then we can all take the pace a bit slower, knowing we stayed the course to the end.

Thank you for your continued support for your child(ren) and River View.

Dan Joseph
Principal

Student of the Month

Each month we recognize one student from each grade level that is a true model of the River View way. All students that are chosen constantly demonstrate how to be respectful, responsible and productive.

For the month of February:
5th Grade: Mackenzie Sherwood
6th Grade: Payton Kasel
7th Grade: Natalie Wenthur
8th Grade: Makenna DeValk

and Staff of the Month for February is Mrs. Megan Schommer.

Academic Awards

Each spring River View School takes pride in honoring the many students at our school who have worked hard to reach their academic potential. This year we will again host an Academic Awards Night for those students in grades 6, 7 and 8th who have maintained an average of 3.50 or higher Grade Point Average for three quarters this year. Students who have met this criteria will receive an invite to attend this special event.
Our 6th grade students will be recognized on April 26th, at 6:30 pm in the River View Auditorium. Following the presentation there will be a reception in the school cafeteria. The 7th and 8th grade Academic Awards Night will also take place in the River View Auditorium on April 30th .  The 7th grade program begins at 6:00 pm and the 8th grade program will begin at 7:15 pm. After each ceremony there will be a reception in the cafeteria.

Take Your Child to Work Day

Thursday, April 26th marks the national participation day providing the opportunity for children to accompany their parents to work.  This day supports the District’s efforts to provide career learning opportunities for our students. In order to help student, employer and the District prepare, we have established District application and guidelines.  If you are interested in having your son/daughter accompany you to work on Thursday, April 26th, please request an application from the school office. Complete the questionnaire and return it to the principal’s office by Friday, April 27th in order for your child to be marked excused for the day.

From the School Nurse

Although head lice is not a major health concern, the experience can be very disheartening.  Especially since some strains of head lice are becoming resistant to the current over-the-counter treatment regimens.  Believe it or not the best way to treat chronic head lice is to diligently check their head daily and remove any and all eggs that are found.  Any eggs left behind may hatch and the cycle will begin again.
Head lice are not choosy as to what type of hair they prefer.  The louse is said to be an equal opportunity, gender blind, ethnically diverse parasite.  In other words, no one is immune. The best way to decrease your child’s chances of getting lice is to discourage sharing of personal items that may carry the louse (i.e. combs, hats, clothing…).
I would recommend checking your child routinely to ensure early detection.  If you discover that your child has head lice, please notify the Health Office as soon as possible.  The sooner we are aware of the problem the better able we are in preventing the spread to other students.  If you would like more information, or if you have any questions, please contact the school nurse.

Replenish School Supplies

It is the beginning of the 4th quarter and a great time to check with your child to see if they need to replenish their school supplies.  All students need to have loose leaf paper, pens, pencils, and a calculator to allow them to finish out the school year KAUKAUNA STRONG!!

Sixth Grade Camp is Coming!

Sixth grade camp will be running from April 30-May 9.  If your child requires prescription medication at camp, there is a separate form that must be signed by the doctor and returned to school.  The medication needs to be sent to school in its original container the week before your child leaves for camp.  If your child requires over-the-counter medication (other than Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Benadryl, or Mylanta/Tums),  please send a signed note, along with the medication in its proper container, to school the week before your child departs for camp.  Medication, other than inhalers, needs to be kept with the nurse at camp, not in the student’s bag or cabin. Please call the health office at ext. 4179 if you have questions.
Final camp payments were due February 21st.  If you still owe money for camp, please send it to the school office with your child as soon as possible.  If you are in need of assistance, please contact the office to discuss options for payment. Once we have an accurate number of students attending camp, the transportation fee will be calculated.  That payment information will be coming home soon.
Your child should have brought home a camp booklet at the end of March with lots of great information about camp.  Included in the booklet will be a list of what to pack. Please take time to go over the information with your child so that your child is ready for an awesome camp experience!

A Busy Spring for RVMS Bands

In early March, over 100 RVMS band students performed at the district level Solo and Ensemble Competition at Appleton North High School.  Congratulations to three 8th graders, Henry Wolfe, Kal Dvorak, and Wes Boucher, for advancing their percussion trio to the state level competition in early May at UW- Green Bay. This is an achievement usually only reached by high school upperclassman.

The 8th Grade Band and the RVS Jazz Band enjoyed successful performances at the High School Pops Concert in late March, featuring, "Great Movie Marches", "Congratulations" by Post Malone, "Enter Sandman" by Metalica, and "Gonna Fly Now." All of the RVMS bands look forward to joining forces with the high school bands at the annual Band Bash Concert. Hear the show on April 23rd at 7:00 pm in the KHS Gym.

Sports Physicals for 2018-19

Scheduling a child's sports physical can be a tricky task if put off until the last minute. You can schedule these exams with a date of April 1st or later which will be valid for two school years.  River View follows the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association requirements and physicals are required for students involved in athletics. A physical form signed by a physician/ physician assistant must be on file at River View before he or she is able to participate in sports practices or events.

7th Grade Field Trip

The seventh graders will have the exciting opportunity to visit the Milwaukee Public Museum on April 25th from 7:45 am-4:00 pm. We are excited to include a multimedia component to the field trip for students to support their 21st Century Skills. We are recommending that students bring a portable charger for their devices with them on the trip. Permission slips will need to be returned by Wednesday, April 4th. Please review the trip expectations before April 25 with your student. It will be an exciting day of learning for our 7th grade students!

PE Force

The 4th quarter units are under way! The students are eager to get outside and enjoy some outdoor activities including baseball/softball, disc golf, biking around the school, and track and field at Bayorgeon Field. Please help your son(s)/daughter(s) with the preparation for these outdoor units by packing warm clothes in case it may still be chilly outside.

Soon students will also be running the mile as the weather gets nicer and retaking their pacer cardiovascular endurance test. We are excited to see the improvement the students have made!

Encourage your son/daughter to check through our P.E. lost and found located outside Gym A. We have accumulated a large amount of clothes and shoes. If your child is missing something, please have them check.
Keep up the great work!
