Family Newsletter September 2020

From the Desktop of Mr. Joseph

How wonderful it has been to have the school filled with the voices of our students; hearing their laughter and seeing them engaged in learning each day is fantastic. Each day we are getting stronger and more confident in the routines at home and school and that will only help push the learning forward. I thank you for your continued support and flexibility, specifically with encouraging your children to stay connected during their virtual learning days. Please continue to reach out to the teachers and school with your questions and to get clarifications as needed. Together we will make this a positive and productive school year filled with many special learning opportunities.

Thank you and be well.

Take care

Dan Joseph

Principal

Safety First

The safety of all our students is a priority that we take seriously both inside the building as well as outside on the playground, in the parking lot and in our crosswalks. With the school year underway I want to remind all drivers to please slow down as you are moving about school property. Thank you as well for giving students and adults plenty of space while they are in the crosswalks and for not calling your child to run between buses to be picked up in the street.

Your child(ren)'s safety is very important to us so thank you for your support and cooperation with keeping these requests in mind as you come to school.

Safety Week

During the week of September 14th, River View will be hosting its annual Safety Week. As part of this week students will participate in various practice drills(fire, tornado, hold, evacuation) to help them be better prepared in the event we have an actual situation.

Picture Retake Day

River View School will hold a Picture Retake Days on Monday September 28th, for Cohort A students, from 7:15am-10:30 am AND Thursday October 1st, for Cohort B students, from 7:30am-10:30am. Virtual only students may come either day. This would be for students who have already received their photos and did not like how they turned out as well as for those students who haven’t had their picture taken yet. Regarding picture charges, please write a separate check to Network Photography for your picture packet or purchase online. Purchasing a picture packet does not include the purchase of a yearbook.

Yearbooks can be purchased at Jostens.com for $14.

If you have any questions regarding picture information, go to: www.studioatnetwork.net or call 262-677-8662.

Free Lunches at Kaukauna Schools

Thanks to a waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Kaukauna Area School District and Chartwells are now able to offer free breakfast and lunch for all children 18 and younger throughout the Kaukauna community. This means that whether attending school at home or virtually, and whether enrolled in KASD schools or not, a free, school-provided breakfast and lunch is available for all children 18 and younger.

The flexibility in the school meal program allows KASD to ensure meal options are available for all students and children are able to access meals under all circumstances.

Meals will include an entree with assorted fruits and vegetables, along with a choice of chocolate, 1% or skim milk. (Students attending on-site at River View and KHS students must pay for a second meal or ala carte items, should they choose; extra milk at the elementary schools will cost an additional $.50)

Meals for those not currently attending a District school will be able to pick up a meal at any of our six school buildings. Pickup times are as follows:

*River View Middle School: 10:20-10:50
*Electa Quinney Elementary School: 10:35-10:55
*Kaukauna High School: 10:30-11:00
*Park Community Charter School: 10:40-11:10
*Victor Haen Elementary School: 10:45-11:15
*Tanner Early Learning Center: 10:55-11:25

This change is effective immediately, and will continue until December 31, 2020, or until further notice.

Should you have additional questions about this program, please do not hesitate to contact Chartwells at (920) 759-6122.

Lunch and Ala Carte Helpful Hints

· Parents have the option to put a block on the purchase of ala carte items. Contact Chartwells at 759-6122.

· Milk is considered Ala Carte if not purchased with a meal. If a student has a block on purchasing ala carte and brings a cold lunch and wants to purchase a milk, he/she will not be able to purchase the milk. To avoid this, families can have a 50 cent limit on the ala carte versus a block on purchasing ala carte.

· Students who receive free and reduced meals need to have money in their account and be in the positive in order to purchase Ala Carte items.

· If students are told that their balance is too low to purchase a meal, they should see a lunch supervisor or ask to go to the office so that we can help support them in calling to have someone bring money or a lunch to school.· Contact Chartwells to make any changes to your account at 759-6122.

**Is Your Child Prepared For Winter Sports?**

Please make sure your child has their MOST CURRENT Physical and/or Alternate Year card on file in the River View Office. In order for your child to participate fully, one of these must be on file.

Please contact us at (920)766-6111 with ANY questions regarding the status of physicals or alternate year cards. We are happy to answer any of your questions!

What Parents Need to Know About
Eighth Grade Academic and Career Planning Meetings

A message from Mr. Hill, School Counselor (grade 8)

One of the key components to the Wisconsin School Counseling curriculum is to have eighth graders participate in an Eighth Grade Academic and Career Planning Meeting.

The Eighth Grade Academic and Career Planning Meetings are specifically designed for parents/guardians and students to meet with me to gain insight into their child’s development to this point and to help the student create goals for the future and assist with the transition to the high school.

Due to the pandemic, we will be having these meetings virtual this school year. I am going to try to accommodate to your schedules this year, to allow you the best opportunity to meet with me about your son/daughter(s) future. The focus of our meeting will be the high school transition. The meeting will be about 30 minutes long.

5th Grade Beginning Band and Orchestra

Every student who is thinking about starting a band or orchestra instrument is encouraged to begin in the 5th grade year because it becomes more difficult to start an instrument in the future once others have already begun. Through their general music classes, all 5th graders have had a chance to hear and see their instrument options for both programs. Students have also been provided with links to the band and orchestra websites to sign up.

Here are some important dates to mark on your calendar!

September 8th - 11th - All 5th grade students receive information in music class about the band and orchestra programs.

Students should be visiting the websites to fill out the Instrument Matching Tool to register for these programs

BAND website - Be Part of the BAND

ORCHESTRA website - Be Part of the ORCHESTRA

September 18th – Deadline for submitting Instrument Matching Tool forms to register for Band or Orchestra

September 23rd - 5th grade students, who have registered for band or orchestra, will receive an email to let them know what instrument section they will be placed in for the year

Week of October 12th- Band and Orchestra lessons begin!!

Kathryn Nesemann, Orchestra Instructor- nesemannk@kaukaunasd.org
Julia Langenhuizen, Band Instructor- langenhuizenj@kaukaunasd.org
