April 2019 Family Newsletter

From the Principal’s Desk

Happy Spring everyone!

I know I am looking forward to the longer and warmer days of April. With the change of season it also means we are heading into the last quarter of the school year and indeed there is still a lot of learning that will be taking place before school lets for the summer. I want to take this opportunity to encourage you to stay the course when it comes to maintaining the routines you have established this year. Certainly I understand that the warmer days will be calling the kids to be outside more and who could blame after the cold couple of month we experienced. However, holding firm with routines regarding homework, bedtimes, attending school, etc. will be essential to keep the learning marching forward. Soon enough June will be here and then all can pull back on the pace knowing we stayed the course to the end.

On April 2, I invited all families to participate in the local election process which will also include a question about the District’s proposed referendum. Ahead of the vote, if you have questions or need clarification about the referendum please do not hesitate to contact me at 766-6111.

Thank you for your continued support for your child(ren), River View View Middle School and the Kaukauna Area School District.

From the School Nurse

Nurse’s Corner

March is National Nutrition Month. Here are some healthy tips to fuel your growing middle school students.

Remember even though pizza and ice cream may be your child's favorite meal, moderation is always the key. Try including at least 3 cups of low-fat/non-fat milk a day, shoot for 5 servings of fruit or vegetables a day, limit foods that are high in sugar and fat, and make sure they are getting adequate sleep nightly. Sleep is a big part of being and staying healthy! See below a fun graph to help guide your child to the appropriate amount of sleep. It maybe hard to believe but children this age generally need between 10-11 hours of sleep a night. For more information visit www.middleschoolhealth.org.

PE FORCE NEWSLETTER

As 4th quarter begins next week, the physical education classes will begin to be outside for activities. Please send warmer clothing along with your child as most of our 4th quarter units are designed to be outside.

5th graders will participate in: Biking, Disc Activities, and Baseball/Softball/Kickball

6th graders will participate in: Archery, Baseball/Softball/Kickball/ Disc Activities

7th graders will participate in: Archery, Track & Field, and Baseball/Softball/Kickball

8th graders will participate in: Archery, Football, and Creative Games

We encourage students to please look through the lost and found as we are accumulating a lot of items since mid-year. Students will also need to make sure they are able to locate their Phy Ed assigned lock as failure to turn in a lock at the end of the year will result in a $5 fine. Please have your child check for their lock.

As we enter outdoor units it is requested that students who are biking (5th grade) bring their own helmet. A message will be sent home from your child's PE teacher, but safety is a priority and we encourage students to use their own properly sized helmets for the best protection.

Our 7th grade track and field unit (depending on weather) may take your child off campus to Bayorgeon Field to participate and use their regulation sized track. Students will be escorted to the track by their PE teacher as can either jog or utilize our bikes (if they bring a helmet) to get to the track.

As always, any questions please don't hesitate to ask your child's PE teacher. Let's keep our fingers crossed for some sunshine and warmer temperatures.

Replenish School Supplies

It is the beginning of the 4th quarter and a great time to check with your child to see if they need to replenish their school supplies. All students need to have loose leaf paper, pens, pencils, and a calculator to allow them to finish out the school year KAUKAUNA STRONG!!

Pi Day

Pi Day was celebrated in eighth grade math classes on Thursday, March 14. Students discovered how pi is calculated, learned a little trivia about pi, and participated in a pi memorization contest. Our grand prize winner was Lindsay Hmielewski, who tied the RV record with 345 digits. In first place was Mikayla Brofka with 226 digits. Carly Fisher took second place with 100 digits. Rounding out our top five in the pi memorization contest were Madison Bidwell with 78 digits and Allison Ott with 52 digits.

Sixth Grade Camp is Coming!

Sixth grade camp will be running from May 6-15. If your child requires prescription medication at camp, there is a separate form that must be signed by the doctor and returned to school. The medication needs to be sent to school in its original container the week before your child leaves for camp. If your child requires over-the-counter medication (other than Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Benadryl, or Mylanta/Tums), please send a signed note, along with the medication in its proper container, to school the week before your child departs for camp. Medication, other than inhalers, needs to be kept with the nurse at camp, not in the student’s bag or cabin. Please call the health office at ext. 4179 if you have questions.

Final camp payments were due March 15th. If you still owe money for camp, please send it to the school office with your child as soon as possible. If you are in need of assistance, please contact the office to discuss options for payment. Once we have an accurate number of students attending camp, the transportation fee will be calculated. That payment information will be coming home soon.

Your child will be bringing home a camp booklet with lots of great information about camp. Included in the booklet will be a list of what to pack. Please take time to go over the information with your child so that your child is ready for an awesome camp experience!

Sports Physicals for 2019-2020

Scheduling a child's sports physical can be a tricky task if put off until the last minute. You can schedule these exams with a date of April 1st or later which will be valid for two school years. River View follows the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association requirements and physicals are required for students involved in athletics. A physical form signed by a physician/ physician assistant must be on file at River View before he or she is able to participate in sports practices or events.

Take Your Child to Work Day

Thursday, April 25th marks the national participation day providing the opportunity for children to accompany their parents to work. This day supports the District’s efforts to provide career learning opportunities for our students. In order to help student, employer and the District prepare, we have established District application and guidelines. If you are interested in having your son/daughter accompany you to work on Thursday, April 25th, please request an application from the school office. Complete the questionnaire and return it to the principal’s office by Friday, April 26th in order for your child to be marked excused for the day.

7th Grade Field Trip

The 7th grade staff are planning to take seventh grade students to the Milwaukee Public Museum on Wednesday, April 24th and Thursday, April 25th. We are excited to include a multimedia component to the field trip for students to support their 21st century skills. We are recommending that students bring a portable charger for their devices with them on the trip. Permission slips will be coming home around March 21 and will need to be returned by Friday, March 29. Please pay close attention to the date listed on your child's permission slip to know which day they will be traveling to the museum!
