May/June Newsletter 2018

From the Principal’s Desk

Happy Spring! Once again we have arrived at May and the last month of the school year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our parents and guardians for their continued support over the course of the year. Certainly we would not have had the many successes we did if not for your help with persistence and encouragement for your child(ren). With the end of the year just around the corner, I thank you as well for helping the kids stay focused to the end. I know the warm weather and thoughts of summer are starting to creep in at the edges of the kids' minds, but we do need them to hold on a bit longer as there is still a good amount of learning that will be taking place.

A few reminders to help make the push to the end include:

  • Maintain the routines that have been in place all year. They have been working this long so keep them going. This would include bedtimes. I know the sun in up longer now but kids still need their sleep so cutting that short does make a difference in the classroom.
  • Talk with your child(ren) about the importance of finishing strong. The work they do now will pay dividends in the long run by strengthening their understanding and setting a good foundation for next year.

Thank you again for all the support and enjoy your May and the summer.

Dan Joseph
Principal

2018-2019 ONLINE REGISTRATION!

The Kaukauna Area School District is excited to announce that beginning this July, for the 2018-2019 school year, all families of returning students and incoming 4K students can update their information online. Families can access their data via online annual registration on the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.

This means that if you have not yet, please sign up for an Infinite Campus Parent Portal account. To set up a parent portal account, complete the request form at: https://goo.gl/forms/KYG2Z0qtAsT1anU43. You will receive an email when your account has been created, along with a temporary password. Please change your password after logging in for the first time You must have your own account and not login using your student's account.

Every parent will need a valid email address for the Infinite Campus Parent Portal account. If you do not have an existing email address, you can create one using one of the free email sites. Two examples are: Google Gmail: https://www.google.com or Yahoo: https://yahoo.com.

We can't wait to start this streamlined registration process, and hope that it makes registration a little easier for all of our incoming families. Thank you for your support!

Registration 2018-2019

Registration for the 2018-2019 school year will take place on August 14th from 12:00-7:00 pm and August 15th from 8:00-12:00 pm at Kaukauna High School. The change of venue for registration is due to the construction that will be happening all summer at River View. Details about specific locations where registration will occur in the high school will be in the summer newsletter.

Thank you for marking these dates on your calendars as these are days students can get schedules, sign up for co-curriculars, get pictures taken, connect with the Health Office about medications and confirm information with the bussing contractor.

A note from Chartwells….

With the end of the year approaching lunch balances need to be brought up to date. Starting Wednesday, May 16th, 2018 students will not be able to charge on their lunch account unless they have a positive balance. Anyone with a negative balance will NOT be able to purchase a MEAL or ALA CARTE unless they have money to pay for the items. We will be accepting money to deposit into the student’s account as usual.

We are asking that you take note of your child/children’s lunch account balance. Accounts will have to be brought up to date by the end of the school year. If we do not receive payment by June 12th and the account balance is more than a $20.00 negative, it will be sent to the Kaukauna Area School District Collection Agency.

If you choose to let your child/children’s lunch account balance go below the $5.00 mark because of the end of the year, please remember the Kaukauna Area School District Messenger Service will continue to contact you. This is an automated service and cannot be turned off.

Remember to make each day a safe and healthy one!

Congratulations to 8th graders Wesley Boucher, Kal Dvorak, Henry Wolfe for earning a perfect score

Health Room News

If your child has prescription or over the counter medications at school, you will be getting a call from the health office to pick up any leftover medication. Students who have epi-pens or diabetes supplies can take them home on the last day.

We will again be sending home a letter during the summer indicating needed health information for Fall 2018. Students who are entering sixth grade WILL need an updated Tdap (tetanus and pertussis) shot.

Thanks!

Emily Jansen, RN

Eighth Grade Farewell Activity Day

The annual 8th grade Farewell will be held on Tuesday, June 5. The purpose of the farewell is to celebrate the end of the class of 2022’s journey through middle school. Throughout the day the 8th graders will participate in a battle of the homerooms, hand out class awards, view the 8th grade video, grill out for lunch, and go to the pool where we will swim for the afternoon. Please watch for a permission slip to come home soon.

Back to School Clothes

If you think you may need help with getting back-to-school clothes/shoes for your children, there is an event called “Cool for School” that may help. The event is run through the Community Clothes Closet in Menasha. In order to participate, you will need to either be a current Clothes Closet client OR you will need a referral form to become a client. Contact your school social worker, Karen Wirth (766-6111 ext 4206), if you need a referral form. Although it may seem early to be thinking about back-to-school clothes, it is best to reach out to Mrs. Wirth now as summer hours are limited and it may be difficult to reach her.

Have You Set Up a Parent Portal Account?

If you have not already done so, I encourage you to sign-up for a Parent Portal account.  This account will be necessary throughout your child's educational career to complete registrations, view schedules, pay fees and more.  Click here for directions on how to do this.

Tatum Schaff(8), Griffin Boucher(6), Grace Busse(7), and Brett Paltzer(5) won
their grade level Forward Test drawing.
They could pick either a Kindle Fire or an Echo Dot.

Library Materials

All books and other materials must be returned to the Library Media Center by Friday, May 18th. Overdue notices will be sent home with your child the first and third week of May. Bills for damaged or lost materials will then be issued. Please help your child locate and return all library materials. Thank you.

Chromebook Turn-in - Eighth-grade students will be turning in their Chromebooks and chargers on Friday, June 1st. Seventh-grade students will be turning in their Chromebooks and chargers on Monday, June 4th.

If you have any questions, please contact Paula Davis, Keegan Baur or Jane Krueger at 766-6111, Ext. 4246 during regular school hours.

Spotlighting Literacy

As summer approaches, it is important for your child to establish and continue good reading habits.

Some suggestions to help foster these habits include:

WRITE- encourage your child to write responses as they read. This practice will help them process the details of the text and this a HUGE part of comprehension.

LISTEN- read alouds are effective at any age.

COMMUNICATE- share your readings with your child, from emails to snail mail to magazines to books…...even financial reports require comprehension!

READ- middle schoolers are merging from concrete thinkers to abstract thinkers. Help them take that journey by asking literal questions;

  • Who are the characters?
  • What do the characters want?

Or more abstract questions:

  • Why do you think the author chose to tell this story that he/she did?
  • How could it be different?
  • How could you take your own spin on the story and rewrite it?

ASK- reach out to our Media Specialist- Paula Davis, or the Reading Specialists- Coreen Wyngaard/Jennifer Hengel, for suggestions. We can help with book suggestions and reading strategies.

Partnership with the PAC

Cassie Schwandt from the Performing Arts Center (PAC) in Appleton launched the “La Vie Boheme” partnership with the Eagle Academy students at River View Middle School. Students are encouraged to break out of their shell and cultivate the courage to be their authentic self by taking part in visual art workshops, collaborating with peers through the creation of original street art and a public installation of the work.

Students worked with local artist, Stephanie Harvey, during the project. Installation of the artwork at the PAC will occur on April 30th. On May 11th there will be a public reception of the artwork followed by dinner and the performance of Rent.

Art Show

Art work of K-12 Kaukauna students will be on display at the Kaukauna Public Library from May 1 to May 31. Stop in and view the work of our young artists.

Spring Arts Event: Portrait Journey

On Saturday, May 5th there was an interactive gallery event at the Thompson Center in Appleton and our River View students were paired up with a friend living with Dementia.  Students and residents talked and drew each other using various art materials.  The sketches ranged from self-portraits to personal interests. Students and residents enjoyed refreshments and more conversations and laughs.

Lost and Found

Please make sure to have your child check the lost and found tables (one on the 2nd floor, one on 3rd Floor, one near 5-8 office, one by Gym A) by the end of the year to retrieve any item of clothing or lunch boxes that your child may have misplaced at school over the course of the year. Unclaimed items will be brought to St. Vincent de Paul.
