September Family Newsletter 2017

From the Desktop of Mr. Joseph

Welcome back! It is great to have the school year started and the hallways full of learners who are looking to take the next step in their educational journey.

The beginning of a new school year is a magical time in that there is tremendous excitement and renewed energy for the many possibilities that await students and staff. In particular, I find this growth mindset thinking to be very refreshing and something I would like to see us maintain itself over the course of the year. I am truly intrigued about what we would experience, socially, emotionally and academically, if throughout the year, all members of the River View learning community maintained a growth mindset regardless of the circumstances.

To that end I have included below common statements kids/adults say when they are “fixed” in their thinking or when the going gets tough. I have also included statements that support a growth mindset and encourage all of us to them throughout the year to maintain the positive mindset the kids have this time of the year. I look forward to the many positive effects our growth mindsets will have for the students and their overall success.
Have a fantastic school year and thank you for your work assisting your child(ren) to build and/or strengthen their mindset this school year.

Internet Safety Parent Meeting Monday, September 18
6:00-8:00 pm
RV Auditorium

Safety Week

During the week of September 18th River View will be hosting its annual Safety Week. As part of this week students will participate in various practice drills(fire, tornado, hold, evacuation) to help them be better prepared in the event we have an actual situation. Students will also participate in a cyber/internet safety presentation on September 20th, given by our School Resource Officers. This presentation will cover topics such as cyberbullying, internet safety, strategies to protect oneself when online, reporting and potential consequences for inappropriate use of technology.

I also share that on September 18th at 6:00 pm in River View's Auditorium will be hosting a parent presentation about cyber and internet safety. This is a free event and all parents are encouraged to attend to learn more about internet safety for yourself and your children.

The River View Way

  •   Be Respectful
  •   Be Responsible
  •   Be Productive
Our PBIS kick-off jump started our school year in 2017-18.  Staff and students put a lot of time into planning our kick-off.  Each station was run by a group of 8th grade PBIS student leaders who did an excellent job of modeling our expectations for students in grades 5-7.  Staff will continue to acknowledge positive choices and behaviors by handing out Eagle Bills.  Students can save these bills for items from our Eagle Bills Award Menu or put their bills into their grade level bins for weekly rewards.  Each month, students that did not receive a Major ODR (Office Discipline Referral) will take place in a reward celebration.

Thank you for continuing to have conversations about PBIS with your student and helping to promote the River View Way!

Picture Retake Day

River View School will hold a Picture Retake Day on Thursday, September 28th from 8:00-11:30 am. This would be for students who have already received their photos and did not like how they turned out as well as for those students who might have missed registration! Please show us your brightest smile!!

What do you need to know about Eighth Grade and Academic and Career Planning Conferences
A message from Mrs. Hinz, School Counselor (grade 8)
The Kaukauna Area School District has worked very diligently to equip all students with the knowledge and skills needed to find success in their post-secondary endeavors.  To work towards this mission at River View, I will be meeting with all eighth grade students for an ACP (Academic and Career Planning) conference.  These meetings have  been previously referred to as  Eighth Grade Student Planning Conferences. These conferences between parent, student and counselor have been occurring since 2009 at the middle school. Students will bring home a folder that contains all the information we covered in the conference.
The Academic and Career Conferences are a major part of the District's vision to meet the needs of our students in the area of academic and career readiness.  These Academic and Career Planning conferences is an opportunity allowing parents/guardians and student to meet with me in a private meeting to gain insight into their child’s current academic and career interests/goals.  In addition we will discuss important and relevant high school information to help create a successful transition to the high school.
ACP conferences will be offered four times a day from November 1, 2017 through January 31,2018.  The times of the conferences are 7:45 am, 10:00 am, 11:30 am, 2:30 pm (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday Friday) and 2:15 pm (on Tuesdays).  The conferences last approximately 45 minutes.  During fall parent/teacher conferences I will be holding group ACP conferences for parents who have gone through this process with an older child or are unable to meet for an individual ACP conference.
Parents are key members of the ACP conference team. I will be sending an an invite through signup genius via the emails that are in Infinite Campus for your son/daughter. Please plan to attend your son/daughter's ACP conference by making an appointment by November 30th.
If you are unable to attend your child’s conference, please contact me at 766-6111 ext. 4211 or by email (hinza@kaukaunasd.org) that you unable to attend and I will meet with your son/daughter individually.  Additionally, if you do not have an email in Infinite Campus please call me to set up your conference.

After School Homework Help

Starting September 11, River View will be offering after school homework help from 3:15 pm to 3:45 pm each week Monday through Thursday*. Any students who are interested in getting additional help with homework are welcome to participate. This homework time will take place in the Library and is open to all RVMS students. Each day there will be certified staff in the Library from various content areas so should your student become involved in this opportunity it is certain there will be ample staff available to assist them. Teachers may assign students to after school homework help and will inform you of that if they do. You may also assign your child to this supportive opportunity. If you do decide to do that, thank you for alerting your child's teacher so they can support your decision. Students who stay for homework help will need to arrange their own transportation if they do not have a bus to take them home.
*For planning purposes know we will not offer after school homework help on half days or the days before break/vacation.

Homework Request

We understand students may be absent from time to time due to illness. When this occurs we will be happy to gather your child’s homework so you can pick it up or have it sent home with a friend or sibling. If you request homework, thank you for calling as soon as possible in the morning as this will give us time to get things organized.

5th Grade Beginning Band and Orchestra

Every student who is thinking about starting a band or orchestra instrument is encouraged to begin in the 5th grade year because it becomes more difficult to start an instrument in the future once others have already begun.  All 5th grade students will be bringing home information about our Beginning Band and Orchestra programs during the first few days of school.

Here are some important dates to mark on your calendar!
  • September 8th – 15th -Recruitment Week– All 5th grade students will be able to participate in our mouthpiece testing and instrument fittings.
  • September 19th – Band and Orchestra Registration meetings. Parents and students should plan to attend this important meeting at either 4:30 or 5:30 pm at River View to get all the details about these great programs.
  • Week of October 2nd - Band and Orchestra lessons begin!!

Questions? – Please contact one of the following instructors:
  Kathryn Nesemann, Orchestra Instructor –nesemannk@kaukaunasd.org
  Julia Langenhuizen, Band Instructor- langenhuizenj@kaukaunasd.org

Destination Imagination (Grades 5-8)

Destination Imagination (D.I.) is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, problem solving, teamwork, and intellect.  Challenges the students will focus on include STEM, fine arts and serving learning activities. Students will be expected to work as a team to create skits, role play, build props and use their quick thinking. Sound like something you want to get involved in? We sure hope so.

Students who are interested in trying out for the RVMS D.I. team (2) should complete the Informational meeting contract, Medical Treatment and Co-Curricular Forms, which can be found on the RVMS website or picked up in the office. These forms are due to the RV Office by the end of the day October 4th. There will be an informational meeting on Thursday, September 21st after school in the DEC. Tryouts are on October 5th after school in the DEC. Once teams are established, they will meet after school on Thursdays to work on group problems and prepare for competition. Practices will last about an hour and families will be responsible for providing transportation home after practice. The D.I. season runs the months of October thru March with competitions typically on Saturdays in March. You may view a slide presentation here.

Questions can be emailed to willenbrinkh@kaukaunasd.org.

Lunch and Ala Carte Helpful Hints

· Parents have the option to put a block on the purchase of ala carte items.  Contact Chartwells at 759-6122.
· Milk is considered Ala Carte if not purchased with a meal.  If a student has a block on purchasing ala carte and brings a cold lunch and wants to purchase a milk, he/she will not be able to purchase the milk.  To avoid this, families can have a 40 cent limit on the ala carte versus a block on purchasing ala carte.
· Students who receive free and reduced meals need to have money in their account and be in the positive in order to purchase Ala Carte items.
· If students are told that their balance is too low to purchase a meal, they should see a lunch supervisor or ask to go to the office so that we can help support them in calling to have someone bring money or a lunch to school.
· Contact Chartwells to make any changes to your account at 759-6122.

The Cherrydale Fundraiser

The Cherrydale Fundraiser features a variety of items from wrapping paper and chocolates to dishes and décor.  The combination of fabulous items offered through the Cherrydale Fundraiser could help you find some great holiday gifts!  RV will run this fundraiser from September 14-29th with the pickup date as Thursday, November 9th from 3-6 pm in the cafeteria.  The RV PAC appreciates your support.

Breakfast Club

Breakfast Club meets Monday-Friday from 7-7:40 pm in room 138. All students are welcome to join us to complete homework, socialize, or play games. Students can bring their own breakfast, or purchase a breakfast in the school cafeteria.
