March Family Newsletter 2018

From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Parents/Guardians,
With the recent tragic event in Florida and the threat that was made at River View, I want to use this opportunity to review for families the various activities and practices we have in place to support a learning environment that is safe and welcoming for students, staff, families and our guests.
Foremost, I am proud of the work that has taken place to create a culture where many students are comfortable talking/sharing with their teachers and/or administration when they hear or see things happen at River View. I believe activities like Challenge Day and our weekly PBIS Community Days and the trusting relationships that have been created with students are making a difference. I believe most, if not all, students have someone at school they can go/talk to when they are concerned with a safety or personal issue. Having a trusted adult for every student is a value River View shares with the District. When students share their concerns with their parents/guardians, I am thankful that the school is contacted and that we can then follow up and address the situation. Additionally, I feel the different safety drills we practice each year also help make students/staff feel more prepared for a situation at school. Over the course any school year we host Hold, Lock down, and Evacuation drills as well as Fire and Tornado drills.
Regarding physical security of the building, visitors are only allowed into the building through the front doors after they are buzzed in. When they enter visitors are expected to sign in and to wear a Visitor's ID badge while in the building. All other outside doors into River View are locked while students are in classes.  In the last week I have received messages and been part of conversations about how we might improve overall school security before and after school as well. While I do not have answers to these questions, these are situations we will need to look into further to try and improve overall safety.
We do certainly live in a very different world today. Though this is the case, safety for all school stakeholders will always be a priority. Again, I am proud of the work we have done to enhance our safety, and I do feel safe every day as I walk the halls of River View. That said, I also believe there is more we could explore to further improve overall safety and security, while balancing appropriate access for our families and guests.
Thank you for your continued support, and if you have questions/comments regarding safety at River View, please share those with us.
Dan Joseph
Principal

We will be performing for grades 5 and 6 at 1:30 PM on Friday, March 23 and for grades 7 and 8 at 9:15 AM on Monday, March 26. Come and join us for the fun!

Wisconsin Forward Spring State Assessment

The Wisconsin Forward Exam will be given in schools between March 19 and May 4, 2018.  The Forward Exam is a state mandated summative assessment which provides information about what students know and can do in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards.  Students receive a score based on their performance in each content area.

There are sample or practice test questions available for students.  An Online Tools Training (OTT) is available for students at http://dpi.wi.gov/assessment/forward/sample-items. The OTT is intended to give students the opportunity to practice with tools available on the Forward Exam, as well as allow them to familiarize themselves with the testing platform.  The OTT is not scored, nor is it intended to provide practice on the test content. Students will be exploring these tools and training at school prior to testing.

The Forward Exam will be administered online and be given to:
  • Grades 3-8 in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics,
  • Grades 4 and 8 in Science and,
  • Grades 4, 8, and 10 in Social Studies

The Forward Exam includes several question types:
  • Multiple-Choice (MC): Question that has four answer choices, including three distractors and one correct answer.
  • Enhanced Selected Response (ESR): Question which may contain combinations of MC, short-answer, and technology-enhanced
  • Evidence-Based Selected Response (ESBR): Question which has two parts.  The student answers Part A, then provides evidence in Part B to support answer in Part A.
  • Text-Dependent Analysis (TDA): Question used on the ELA test.  The TDA is a text-based analysis, based on a passage that is read by the student during the assessment.  Students must draw on basic writing skills while inferring and synthesizing information from the passage in order to develop a comprehensive, holistic essay response.  Students have up to 5000 characters to formulate their response.
  • Technology-Enhanced (TE): TE questions allow for a more engaging, interactive assessment.
Accommodations and supports for students with disabilities and/or English language learners are built into the system so that the progress of students can be accurately measured.  Some students may take the Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) assessment instead of the WI Forward.  The DLM assessment is intended for students with significant cognitive disabilities in grades 3-11 and is designed to compare a student’s strengths and needs to clearly defined standards, skill levels, or areas of knowledge. It is aligned with the Wisconsin Essential Elements and measures how students perform in relation to those standards.

The estimated time for the test administration in each grade is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes for ELA, 1 hour and 45 minutes for Mathematics, 1 hour and 40 minutes for Science, and 1 hour and 30 minutes for Social Studies.  These are estimated times, as the WI Forward Exam is not a timed test so students work at their own pace.

If you have any questions or concerns about the new assessment, please contact the office.

5th Grade Running Club

This is a club for kids who enjoy running and jogging. Our club is all about having fun while running. We do not focus on speed but work to build stamina and endurance. We will jog and run, play running games, build up our running mileage, and work towards the goal of running the Cellcom 5k, May 19th in Green Bay.

Running Club meeting time will be from 3:15 pm to 4:00 pm and then until 4:30 pm as we build our endurance and run further.  We will be meeting in Gym B immediately after school on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, starting March 26th. Tuesday is band and orchestra night so those students will be excused for band/orchestra practice.

The Cellcom 5k is an optional event that parents would bring their child to and from and requires a separate registration. We will meet as a group before and after the race, but students would be running at their own pace.

IMPORTANT: If your child will not be attending practice for any reason please email one of the coaches before practice. Please don’t make your child participate if they do not want to run. Students tend to avoid practice and I am unsure if the parent just forgot to notify me that their child would not be at practice.

This is a school event, so everyone is expected to follow the guidelines of being Respectful, Responsible and Productive. We welcome volunteers to join us on any night that they are available. In addition, donations of freezer pops will be accepted. We hand these out to the students after running on hot days.

All paperwork will need to be in before running on March 26th.
  1. Physical and Preparticipation Physical Evaluation History Form
  2. Medical Treatment Consent Form For Minors
  3. Concussion Facts Sheet and Agreement Form
  4. Student Running Club Contract

Coaches: Holly Willenbrink     willenbrinkh@kaukaunasd.org

Sports Physicals for 2018-19

Scheduling a child's sports physical can be a tricky task if put off until the last minute. You can schedule these exams with a date of April 1st or later which will be valid for two school years.  River View follows the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association requirements and physicals are required for students involved in athletics. A physical form signed by a physician/ physician assistant must be on file at River View before he or she is able to participate in sports practices or events.

Track Sign Up

Sixth through eighth grade students who are interested in track can sign up in the office.  Participants need to have all paperwork handed in to the office before practice starts on April 2nd (3:30-5:00 pm).

7th Grade Field Trip

The 7th grade staff are planning to take seventh grade students to the Milwaukee Public Museum on Wednesday, April 25th.  We are excited to include a multimedia component to the field trip for students to support their 21st century skills.  We are recommending that students bring a portable charger for their devices with them on the trip. Permission slips will be coming home around March 22nd and will need to be returned by Wednesday, April 4th.

Student Council

In February, Student Council raised $195 for the American Heart Association by selling paper hearts at lunch.  Students paid $1.00 for a heart to hang on the cafeteria windows. For each heart they bought, they received a raffle ticket. Prizes included Little Caesars pizza at lunch and donuts from Hilltop Bakery. Student Council will spend March discussing student concerns and ideas for making our school even better!
